Sandy Bottom / Porcelain Pendant with Okinawan Sand Relief

Large glazed porcelain pendant with Okinawan star-shaped sand relief.

Star-shaped beach sand is considered to be a specialty of Okinawa prefecture (Japan). On the scientific side, star grains belong to biogenic sands produced by foraminifera - bottom-dwelling marine microorganisms. They live their timid life in the sea, but end up on the shores of Okinawa brought up by typhoons and strong storms. Tiny sand grains in the shape of stars are also the subject of a beautiful Okinawan legend. According to the story, star-shaped sand grains are remains of the children of the North Star and the Southern Cross thrown into the ocean by the giant snake monster.

This pendant was hand-sculpted from a fine layer of porcelain covered with relief made by moulding actual star-shaped sand grains from Okinawa island. It was handmade, hand-glazed and fired in a kiln at high temperatures to achieve its final look.

It is unique and one-of-a-kind. Each item from my shop will be sent to you in individually designed handmade packaging with a description tag. It is ready to be gifted to yourself or someone special (no pricing information is included in the packaging).
