Porcelain earrings with ocean-inspired fantasy illustrations.

These earrings were created using a fusion of digital illustration, and hand-printed cyanotype, applied on hand-sculpted fine porcelain.

The main piece of each earring is made of a sheet of Ming Po porcelain. It was handmade and fired in a kiln at high temperatures.

The illustration inspired by ocean-dwelling creatures such as ancient ammonites and modern nautilus molluscs was applied on both sides of each porcelain drop using the cyanotype technique. This technique is a handmade process allowing the development of an image using a combination of chemical dye and sunlight. The invention of this method is attributed to John Frederick William Hershel, an astronomer, and physicist, who introduced cyanotypes in the 1800s. The term 'cyanotype' is derived from the Greek κυάνεος - kuáneos, “dark blue” + τύπος - túpos, “mark, impression, type”. In contrast to traditional photography using silver salt, cyanotypes implement a slow-reacting formulation containing iron salt which results in the illustrious Prussian Blue color upon exposure to near-ultraviolet and blue light.

The image used to create the cyanotype is a fragment of an original ocean-themed digitally created graphic illustration. The earrings are finished with high-quality metal findings from Japan.
