The illustration depicting the Heniochus monoceros (a species of butterflyfish known as the masked bannerfish), was a significant part of 19th-century scientific efforts to catalog the biodiversity of the Pacific Ocean. This illustration was made by George Henry Ford — a natural history illustrator who worked for the British Museum. It was published in 1873 in the book Fische der Südsee (Fishes of the South Sea), specifically from "Heft V" (Issue 5), which was part of the larger publication Journal des Museum Godeffroy. The text, Fische der Südsee, was a comprehensive scientific based on collections made by Andrew Garrett for the Museum Godeffroy.

This listing is for one pair of porcelain earrings with archival scientific illustration. Each piece is hand-sculpted from strong porcelain, fired hot so it’s tough and smooth. The surface carries illustration of Heniochus monoceros from 1873 scientific publication, transferred with cobalt oxide that burns into a deep sea-blue.

The porcelain pieces are about 4 cm in diameter, giving them the bold scale of statement earrings. Their size carries a certain weight, yet the delicate porcelain sheet keeps them comfortably wearable.

These earrings represent a unique piece of jewellery.
