Chauliodus / Small Porcelain Ring Dish

Small jewellery/trinket dish with archival scientific illustration.

Hand-sculpted from porcelain, this dish carries illustration of Sloane's Viperfish (scientific name: Chauliodus sloani), transferred with cobalt oxide that burns into a deep sea-blue. Chauliodus sloani—a bioluminescent, deep-sea dragonfish known for its extremely long, fang-like teeth—was first described by German scientists Marcus Elieser Bloch and Johann Gottlob Schneider in their 1801 book. This particular illustration is a 19th‑century French zoological engraving of Sloane’s viperfish, produced for the periodical Magasin de zoologie and engraved by Joseph Alfred Annedouche after an original drawing by “Mlle Alberti.

This mini dish is perfect for resting your ring, a pair of earrings or a small collection of shark teeth... It was fired in a kiln at different temperatures to achieve its final look. This plate was produced in a single version and represent a unique piece of decor.
